Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds can be used for business practices, education, delivery services, or an advanced form of telehealthcare that offers much more than video-conferencing. Virtual worlds help give us social connectivity, built-in support groups, and ways to avoid being alone. Using virtual worlds helps people become connected by the bodily representations caused avatars. We can also use virtual worlds as a virtual training environment for soldiers and psychological healing spaces. Even though there are many benefits, virtual worlds are still artificial; they are not real experiences. People may become disconnected from reality and keep on using virtual worlds to feel some sort of connection with society.

Virtual worlds can foster creativity in children if they are used correctly in classrooms. Students are able to experience Civil War battlefields, walk through the land of dinosaurs, and put themselves in other people's shoes to learn empathy. VR experience allows students to become more open-minded and change their view of the world. In "The Virtual World Moves into the Classroom," one VR program allowed students to follow refugee families, and the students who went into their world virtually left with different opinions from the ones they held before.

I think the future of virtual worlds will be used everywhere. It is a great opportunity for businesses to incorporate into their daily lives. In a matter of time, virtual reality may be available on iPads and Smart Phones. The trend will continue to grow.

  1. Hey Joyce,

I also agree that the possibilities virtual technology could bring are endless. However, I truly do wonder if our future employers will one day ask for all of us to log into mandatory virtual world meetings. If asked, do you think employees would carefully devote time towards building a look-a-like avatar of themselves? Also, if these types of meetings were to take place, could it possibly replace video call meetings? We'll just have to stay tuned for further developments!

  2. Virtual reality has always seem like such a cool concept to me. The user can take a break from society/reality and emerge him/herself into an entirely new world. Games can be used as a stress reliever and allow the user experience fantasy elements as well. The user can also do things that s/he wouldn't be able to do in real life.
